Fashion Magazine Evaluation

The set task I had was to choose to either create a short film or a fashion magazine cover and double page spread. I chose the fashion magazine option and decided to create a print magazine, because I have more experience in this than in film making.

A lot of the top fashion magazines being sold today, that look to target a wealthier audience, create this idea that more money and a suited look is formal. Such as Vogue, Elle and GQ. For my magazine ‘False9’, I have challenged this idea. To do this I have used a more formal layout but with street/sport style fashion, attempting to change an ideology that this fashion style is tacky and untidy.

The target audience for my fashion magazine is 16-18 year old boys, that have interests in sports and fashion. To address my target audience I had a young football prospect, whos known for his sports style of fashion, in which he is creating his own brand. Having someone like this on the front cover will attract my target audience to pick up and read my fashion magazine.

My final product would be distributed in usual supermarkets and shops, but also sell them in sport stores such as JD and DW Sports. I would do this because this is an easier way to distribute to the targeted readers and therefore I would most likely increase the sales of my fashion magazine.

The masthead ‘False9’ is an attacking position in football. This position is known to be a more creative and stylistic way of playing the game and therefore having these connotations of style links well to the magazine.

The blue, white and black text layout was used in my magazine. I used the blue as there is a strong connection between blue and boys, therefore when a reader picks up my magazine they'll know exactly who the magazine is aimed at straight away. The white was used as this has connotations of being clean and well. As this fashion style is often associated with the opposite, this was used to encourage the change in that ideology. The black wasnt used a lot, but the small glimpse of the colour gives a connotation of elegance. Again reinforcing that this sport fashion style should be associated with elegance and formality.

Also I used a grey background with a slight gradient. This was used because grey is very much a symbolisation of boredom, however the use of the gradient created this sense that it's turning from dark to light, and that there is hope and change. This is linked to the ideas and reasons of creating my magazine, that this fashion style shouldn't be frowned upon and instead be more recognised as high end fashion.

For my double page spread I kept with the same colour scheme to keep consistency in the magazine. Also the heading and blurb was used to lead the reader into reading more on the article written below it.

The article is written around the centre image of the page. The wrap form of text creates a sense that the text and the image are linked. This makes it easier to make clear what each page of the article is about, the left hand page being about his fashion life (as Dexter is in fashionable clothes) and on the right his life as a professional footballer (as he is in his football kit).

Here on the top of the right hand page I used a quote from the article with a sell line above. This was too entice the reader more into reading the article on this page, and from my audience research this is an article they should have interest in. So giving this more attention, the reader is more likely to read this and then hopefully enjoy what they read and buy a future copy.
